The HU5k course takes a journey through some of South Gloucestershire’s stunning countryside in and around the village of Hawkesbury Upton. The route is gently undulating on roads and tracks which are paved or earth-surfaced, with short sections on grass footpath. The event starts at the playing field at the Hawkesbury Upton Village Hall (postcode: GL9 1AT), where all our race facilities are to be found.
After a short lap of the field (to spread out the pack) the route heads down the Hawkesbury Upton high street past the school, with views towards the famous Somerset Monument. Turning left at Drovers’ pool we head onto Bath Lane to follow the Cotswold Way and Monarch’s way.
1st kilometre kindly sponsored by: Sodbury fuels (www.sodburyfuels.co.uk)
Bath Lane is locally known as “The Yellow Brick Road” and it is easy to see why as the course heads up on a tree-lined track made from the local yellow sandstone. The moderate 20-metre climb along an old roman road is soon over, and you will be rewarded with some spectacular views across the Severn Estuary and the local farmland.
2nd kilometre kindly sponsored by: The Parlour Pool (www.parlourpool.co.uk)
The course continues to follow Bath Lane with its views over the valleys and farms of the Cotswold escarpment – the long and steady descent provides a great chance to enjoy the ever-changing scenery (or to get some serious speed in) through the half-way point and towards the 3rd kilometre marker.
3rd kilometre kindly sponsored by: Landcare tree nursery (www.landcaretrees.co.uk)
The Cotswold Way changes from wide track to field-side paths for a few hundred metres before we take a sharp turn onto Highfield lane and start heading back to the village. This quiet road weaves through shady tree cover and open farmland, providing a great opportunity to get your head down before the final push to the finish!
4th kilometre kindly sponsored by: The Holford Arms (www.theholfordarms.co.uk)
The route comes back into the village up a long incline and turns left past the war memorial and along the high street with the community stores, its characterful properties and pubs – before a sprint finish back into the village hall field for a celebratory barbecue!
